Local Area
Many inns and restaurants are located in the area serving a wide range of food
to suit all tastes from traditional pub meals to gourmet bistros. Our local village
inn is just a short walk from the house and offers an excellent menu.
There are good walks to be had along the extensive footpath system surrounding
Langton Herring. These paths cross some of the most varied and spectacular
countryside in the south of England. Ornithologists are spoilt for choice with
several reserves close by plus Britain's only nesting colony of mute swans, at
Abbotsbury. This ancient and charming village is just three miles away and also
features renowned sub-tropical gardens and a massive medieval Tithe Barn, one of
Europe's finest.
Other places worth visiting include the seaside resort of Weymouth with its superb
bay, safe bathing beaches and quaint old harbour and our county town of Dorchester.
Here you will find remains of the Roman occupation 900 years ago, award-winning
museums and historic buildings. Every Wednesday there is a large market which draws
visitors from miles around. Langton Herring is a picturesque Dorset village set in
countryside of outstanding natural beauty. Steeped in history, little of the area
has changed over the centuries. You will find peace and tranquility in this unique
region and yet, busy towns and holiday resorts are just a few miles away. From the
village, the Fleet lagoon, Chesil Beach and the South West Long-Distance Coastal
Path can be reached easily. There is so much for visitors to enjoy.
Dorset has the most scenic and varied coastal landscape of any county in Britain.
Here you will find the highest cliff on the south coast, (Golden Cap) the longest
pebble beach in the world (Chesil) and one of the world's largest natural harbours
at Poole.
